They said it didn't need replacing after 5 years although VW UK said it did. My dealer then said that there was NO recommended service interval on the VW maintenance computer. I then checked with two other franchises and got VW UK to send me a letter which stated that they recommend a change after 5 years or 60k which ever is the sooner.

The timing belt is much quieter then a timing chain and vw also has problems with timing chains becuase over time they extend and you need to replace them which usually requires much more work and money then a timing belt change. From a bunch of people who know I hope you are listening. The timing chain is not the only issue with the TSI. I'd go hunting around the net for more information before biting the bullet. I have been aware for several years that one of the common issues with the 2. Water pumps also seem to be another common failure item. Lucas, My engine shit itself, spat a rod out and tore itself to pieces after a tensioner failed at high rpm. They typically fail on shutdown when the crank rocks back against a compression stroke that isn't completed.
This causes the slack side of the timing chain to be pulled tight and punch the pawl out of the tensioner device with the engine off there is no oil pressure to energise the tensioner The damage happens the next morning on start up, there is no oil pressure to activate the tensioner, and the slack chain is allowed to jump a number of teeth on the cam sprockets. As for warranty, i was tuned and got nowhere.

I tried to start my car and it looks like it jumped the timing, sounds like a tensioner failure. Took a look at the timing chain behind the cover and the chain was loose. Took the cylinder head off and sure enough the valves were bent.Diode circuit
I'm ready to install the Cylinder head back on after an overhaul done to it, but does anyone know if before I put the 1 cylinder in TDC does all the gears besides the camshafts gears have to line up to the dark links on the chains? Is there a good reference for this repair? Which tensioner version do you have? What year car? Sorry to hear this bro, I wish they would recall this nonsense.

Timing chain has no service interval as such Thought belts still every 3 years, or 30k miles?? They used to be 60k miles, year intervals but i believe they now k - but you inspect more frequently. Where a belt is designed and manufactured to be fit for purpose and 'on top of the job' they will last the lifetime of the engine, the old VTEC Honda engines had no belt change in the service schedule for this reason. You will get a CEL if the chain falls out of alignment spec but otherwise lifetime.
The serpentine belt technically has no replacement interval either, just inspection frayed, cracked, etc Does anyone know by how much out of alignment it takes for that CEL to come on, degrees? Timing chains are the conductor of your engine. Through a series of guides and tensioners, the chain links the crankshaft to the camshaft and is responsible for keeping the valves of the cylinder head in sync with the pistons of the combustion chamber. If the timing chain becomes loose, either by stretching or a failed tensioner, there are serious problems ahead. Why so early? The most likely cause is a timing chain tensioner failure. Tensioners make sure the chain is tightly wound to the pulleys and gears. If the tensioner fails and the chain becomes loose, the timing of the engine is thrown off.
If the chain is loose, you could have trouble starting the engine or it might misfire while driving. Sensors in the crankshaft and camshaft should pickup on timing issues like this and illuminate the check engine light. If you find metal shavings in the oil it might indicate that the links and rollers in the chain are worn out from age of improper lubrication from dirty oil.
The TSBs outlined how to respond to customer complaints about the timing chain. Many owners were met with accusations of improper oil and filter maintenance. Fed up and facing massive repair bills, the first timing chain lawsuit was filed in May of It placed blame on the tensioner system and said VW should help pay for repairs. Is that true? If so what's other proeples opinion on that. I wonder what service interval is mentioned in the maintenance guide. It is usually stated there. Previous generation engine was K. TB interval raised to k a couple years ago for the previous engine. EA has a belt which drives the oil pump which does not have a replacement interval specified.
I was interested in this and read the referenced information and the drive for the oil pump and the cam are both listed as lifetime, however I assume the hex drive for the CBEA is also a lifetime item.
It is a lot like the lifetime no grease bearings etc. The lifetime is over when the part fails. It seems that there are a number of weak links already, but I don't know if this will be another one or not. I am currently planning on changing the HEX drive shaft on my JSW before it strips out like several posting have recently made on the Forums. Sell your cars around k Never need change of belt while you own the car. Nothing is life time on a vehicle. Especially mechanical. I don't care what anyone says.
